Matt Rushton Training Biography
Special Forces Operator, Firearms Consultant, Trainer, and Competitive Shooter.
Matt Rushton is a seasoned U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret) Weapons Sergeant with over 17 years of continuous active-duty service. Known for his relentless dedication to mastering and teaching the art of gunfighting, Matt combines decades of operational experience with competitive shooting expertise. He has represented elite Special Operations units in numerous sniper and marksmanship competitions, achieving top rankings in both military and civilian shooting events.
A lifelong gun enthusiast, Matt began competing in shooting sports as a teenager, accumulating national and world championship titles, including the United States Air Rifle Field Target Hunter Division National Champion and World Champion in 2007. His deep passion for firearms led him to enlist at age 20, ultimately earning his place among the elite ranks of the U.S. Army Special Forces.
Matt has served as an active-duty Green Beret Weapons Sergeant continuously since 2007. He spent six years with the 20th Special Forces Group, where he deployed, taught Combat Marksmanship for the Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course (SFAUCC), and competed in the USASOC Sniper Competition, among numerous other responsibilities.
Over his 17+ years of service, Matt has trained at the Army’s most elite gunfighter schools and later became an instructor for several of them. His credentials include SFARTAEC (Close Quarters Combat Course), the Level 1 Special Forces Sniper Course (where he also served as an instructor), and teaching over 1,250 Special Operators from various top-tier units. His areas of instruction covered Close Quarters Battle (CQB), advanced combat marksmanship, tactical planning, sniper skills, fieldcraft, reconnaissance, and surveillance operations.
Matt’s professional military experience has been exceptionally well-rounded, with a strong focus on mission execution and enhancing overall lethality. His multi-disciplinary approach is defined by the mantra, “Accomplish the Mission.” While skills, tactics, and equipment may evolve, Matt emphasizes that the human element remains the critical factor for success, whether in military, law enforcement, or civilian roles.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Matt is highly regarded in the firearms industry for his consulting work, helping evaluate and develop innovative products tailored for both the Special Operations community and civilian markets.
His passion for advancing shooting culture has led him to launch Obstreperous Solutions Group (OSG) LLC and a corresponding YouTube channel dedicated to promoting precision marksmanship, tactical training, and responsible firearms education.
Matt has also been a competitive force in the Precision Rifle Series (PRS), Quantified Performance, USPSA, and 2-Gun circuits. His recent accomplishments include multiple top finishes in regional and national-level matches, with a focus on Precision Rifle Rimfire, PRS Gas Gun, and USPSA Carry Optics for 2025.
